Why Does Icing Help?
According to the University of Michigan Health System, plantar fasciitis causes small tissues to tear apart and cause inflammation. Thus, ice reduces the inflammation and causes relief. In general, the most painful area of the foot in this condition is the heel, but one’s arch may become sore too. Icing may reduce the stinging feeling and swelling.
The Don’ts of Icing
Firstly, remember not to apply the ice directly onto one’s skin as it may result in frostbite. The ice must be kept separate from the surface of the skin by using a hand towel, paper towel or washcloth.
Secondly, do not apply the ice for more than 20 minutes at once. Using the ice for longer periods won’t help relieve the pain quickly.
Furthermore, if you feel a stinging sensation while applying the ice, it must be removed immediately.
Six Ways to Ice Plantar Fasciitis
The icing is one of the most inexpensive home remedies for plantar fasciitis pain. All a person needs are water to make ice and a few other supplies, some which are available at home.
Ice Therapy Slippers
It is the easiest icing treatment among all. The ice gel is shaped like the foot and distributes the weight where it is needed the most. It is stored in the freezer and can be worn for 5 to 10 minutes for pain relief.
Place ice cubes in a towel or plastic bag and apply it to the sensitive parts of the foot.
A pack of frozen peas or mixed vegetables can make a good ice pack. The good thing is that it can even be reused.
Store-Bought Ice Packs
Ice packs are available in various sizes and shapes in the market. Although they cost a little more than the ice at home, they are a good option as first aid in any household.
Fill a paper cup with water and put it in the freezer. Whenever needed, take out the paper cup and peel it off from the ice. This circular shape ice can fit well on the arch of the foot and can be rolled over it, which can be very soothing.
Fill a bottle with water and put it in the freezer. Apply that to the foot whenever required as it gives a natural rolling massage action.
